Lucky, they hire somebody they think will get on with personally.

Which is one very good reason for hiring people.

If someone does not have the skills to interact with other members of the team they can be a hindrance not a benefit to the company.

I have turned down perfectly qualified people for this very reason

Isn't that a little shallow, lucky?

Shouldn't their skills be more important than their ability to discuss your personal interests?

I know person one, but after six months of plugging away you lose hope. After endless interviews and applications you lose all hope.

If I do voluntary work I lose benefits, I cannot afford that. Hell, I can't even find somewhere to live as nobody will take HB tennents due to idiotic mortage restrictions.

I'd rather not give too many personal details over the internet, but the letters after my name read: Bsc, CPE, LPC.

I'm not a new graduate either. Yet, somehow I am not suitable for so much as a job in the post room.

Lucky, do you really believe that non-existant jobs are never advertised? You are gloriously naive lol.

I'm not losing benefits for doing voluntary work, granted I'm only claiming jobseekers allowance but I just filled in a form stating that it wouldn't affect my availability for work and an interview/offer would always take precedence.

I'd definitely have a word about doing voluntary work, its really really boosted my CV, my application are so much stronger now and more role-appropriate now then when I first started applying.

Sometimes, organisations (particularly in the public sector) HAVE to advertise a post. I know of one that is being advertised but they have no intention of filling it due to budget cuts.

And getting on with someone is often the best way of employing someone, I would rather employ someone who is slightly worse than another candidate if I felt their attitude and personailty was far more suitable for the job

Sorry lucky, I'm simply angry after another rejection letter. I asked for feedback and I'm told I don't have the right experience.... so why bleedin' interview me then? What was the bloody point?

No a mixture of the both are required, you could be the most qualified person but if you lacked skills in other areas such as interaction (and hobbies etc show the capability in doing this) then you are less likely to get jobs that require contact with other people

Maybe you have the right qualifications but not the experience?

And as to your comments about my methods being shallow, I do not employ people to discuss my personal interests. I employ them to be good team players, skilled at their job.

In other words, I really should just give up....

I'm (believe it or not!) quite a shy, geeky person in real life. I'm also terrible at feighing interest in subjects I don't care about. My hobbies are not your average ones as well.

People do not like shy people, they think they're "stuck up".

To see whether you are seriously looking for less demanding job to fit your lifestyle or whether they are one stop shop and you will pi** off as soon as you have a better offer?

Sorry, but interviewing, hiring, advertising etc is expensive and time consuming job and I wouldn't hire you just because you have the best qualifications. I would hire you because you can fit in as well as qualification/experience.

"I don't need you to explain quantum physics to me, I want you to make a cup of tea without ramble" attitude is completely normal in hiring of admin jobs.

Because the person with the right experience may not have had the right attitude. So it may have been your time.

I know it is disheartening - I've been there - but interview experience is still good experience for you, especially when you come to recruit your own staff.
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.
