Covering a Plasterboard Ceiling

Have just put a ceiling up with sections of plasterboard. What is the cheapest way of covering it? Would like to paint it but obviously it will look like painted plasterboard. How can I make the ceiling smooth first?
Thanks

It shouldn't cost too much for a ceiling to be done, it is afterall just a few hours work for someone. Then a days work on another day to artex it (if you don't want to paint the plaster directly)
But if you don't want it plastered you can line it with lining paper then wallpaper such as chip wood paper. Then you can paint it white.0 -
We are having a room skimmed at this moment in time. We were thinking of just putting lining paper on and painting over. We were advised to have it skimmed as we would regret it if we didn't and once the paper is on plasterboard it is hard to get off. Cost of our room including ceiling and 4 walls is £250. So a ceiling would mabe cost less than a £100. Well worth doing if you can afford to get it done. When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, show life that you have a thousand reasons to smile0

Firstly you need to tape the joints or else they will crack, then skim it with finishing plaster-

I must warn you that skimming a ceiling is very difficult!0 -
