First & Next Tariff Unit charges change randomly??!

Am I just daft, or is it some mathematical formula which is used to work out how many units are charged at the First Rate, and then the rest at the Second Rate on my Gas & Elec bills.
I am contesting things with BGas as I am a single man (who is often elsewhere) is using £68/mth Gas - Don't cook at home... Kitchen and Bedrooms were between 8 and 11 degrees all over winter.... lounge gas fire on occasionally and heating on a bit here and there in the winter months.... not on now since Feb.
My Elec is approx £20/mth....Now that I agree with, as I am hardly here (this bears witness to me not using much as I am always out!)
What do you think. The house is 3 bedrooms, but I am only one here and I do not have a shower, but bath approx 1-2/week (shower at friends!)
Responses would be cool
Thanks

A tariff with 2 different rates for gas is known as the tier system.
Tier 1(the higher rate) is normally charged on the first 1,143kWh per quarter for most companies and 670kWh per quarter with British gas. The rest are at tier 2 - the lower rate.
These are charged pro-rata*. e.g 4572/365 = 12.52kWh per day Tier 1 units(kWh)
* The exception to this pro-rata charging is NPower. They seasonally weight Tier 1 units so you pay for more in winter and less in summer.
£68 a month is high, but that could be caused by a debt building up from earlier times and the DD increased to cover consumption and pay off debt.
Or they have been basing bill on over-estimated meter readings.0
