Basic Bank Account & Financial Links

Hey All.
Myself and my partner have just moved in together last month.
My partner is pretty much debt free, whereas I unfortunately come with a lot of baggage
Anyway, we are currently not linked in anyway financially. Everything todo with money and finance is in seperate names. The only thing that is currently in joint name is the council tax.
We really want to get a joint bank account together (without lending facilities i.e. basic bank account). However, would opening a joint account without any form of credit facility link us financially?
Also if we were linked by this, would my previous/other debt have any affect on my partners record? Or would the only affect come from any adverse use/running of the new joint account?
Any information is greatly appreciated!
Thanks
