How safe are bank transfers for payment ?

How safe are bank transfers for payment for items purchased on Ebay ?. I sell on Ebay and i have always refused to accept a bank transfer as payment as i have been led to believe that they are unsafe as i have to divulge my bank details, is this the case or an urban myth.

You give no more info than on a normal cheque anyway. They're safe. I love them.

Remember that on a cheque, you give someone your bank details and signature - thats one extremely useful piece of useful information thats not on a bank transfer.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

If wer'e not careful this will become another of the banned methods of payment.LOL. Not paying Paypal fees --disgraceful.

As a seller I love bank transfers, as a buyer I wouldn't touch then with a bargepole.

Although I offer them on all my auctions it is probably used only a couple of times a year on 1000+ auctions.

  • I like Bank Transfers, the only thing I don't like about them is that its easy to forget about it and then theres finding out the buyers address later lol.

I love them - especially as it means I have the P&P money to hand, rather than having to juggle an already tight budget to cover it if it's in paypal

To save me forgetting, I put a note against them in My eBay of the date they should clear (usually 4 days after the buyer has sent it).

And as for getting the buyers address - if they don't complete checkout, it's on the EOA email anyway, or you could always start to raise an invoice then back up out of it before hitting send.

If you're worried about giving out your bank details, just open a 2nd bank account. Give out that a/c no and sort code, and when the money arrives transfer it into your main account.
