No probs! You do realise this is the first step to a fantastic addiction! You'll be struggling to find room soon! Good luck with the tomatoes x"Live each day as if it were your last and garden as though you will live forever"

That's what I'm hoping Pookie. I think this weekend is going to be full of planting things!!! I've just found some seeds for carrots and seed potatoes that I got given, they're definitely going to go in, I'm going to read some of the beginners threads on here and see if I can get some good advice on those too!

I stick all my banana skins under the growing tomatoes as well, that's a good tip about putting them under a newly planted plant, I'll try to remember that for next year.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0

lol, that's how I started off last year. Curious, expecting complete failure but loved it anyway.
This year I have wooden boxes in my back yard as raised beds, the front garden has beds (dug by my OH wonder of wonder) and I've just been given a 90ft by 40ft allotment.., and only 1/3 of it is left (less now, someone planted some pumpkins in it - which I hate BTW - while my back was turned lol).
I am now actually sieving all the soil at the edges of the plot that I raked up to get rid of large stones (oodles of them, I could build a couple of dry walls) to see if I can make more room for more crops. And this is from nothing this time last year lol!
BTW, instead of canes, use twigs from anywhere there is trees.., u'll usually find enough at the bottom of any tree.., they are more than enough to support your tomatoes. Mine came from some conifers the LA trimmed a couple of months ago. Felt a bit embarrassed walking back home tho with an armful of long twigs, was waiting for someone to ask me if my broomstick had broken lolol.0 -

Lol!
Sounds familiar! Last year was a couple of pots on the concrete bit, this year I've dug up half the garden the concrete has got oodles of pots and big bookshelves full of veg growing.
I use branches too, all free! Mine come from the end of the garden though, less of the embarrement. However rolling a massive wooden box home got a few crazy looks! :rotfl:
Missy: A bit OT I know, but if you plant spring onions all around your carrots, it confuses carrot fly and you should get a good crop.

My sister is growing them in hanging baskets this year (from seed!!). I shall be interested in the results. Ive just bunged mine in gro bags as it reminds me to water them if they are stuck in the bag. I can remember my dad getting us kids to pinch out the side shoots when we were little
The smell of tomato plants brings back my childhood, it really does. 0 -
Ok well I have been super brave I have planted my now 9 tomato plants and they look ok, and I've bought a book and went to the garden centre and bought loads of veg plants as I know I'm too late in the year to do too much, so have no planted:
rhubarb
red cabbage
strawberries
cucumber
pumpkin
aubergine
peppers
chillie peppers
carrots (from seed!!!)
Broad Beans (from seed!!!)
Radishes
have still to plant:
Peas (from seed)
squash
courgettes
more red cabbage
spring onions (from seed)
beetroot (from seed)
salad leaves
yes I know I don't do things by halves. I think I just got the bug and couldn't stop
I have had a lovely time. Just need to get some seed potatoes now too
)
Thank you again for all your help re the tomatoes, it spurred me on to try more!

Wow! Sounds fantastic!
Oo, do you have a tree or hedge to grow the pumpkin up? Will save you space as they get massive, mine have grown four new leaves (6 inches) in three days!
How are your toms doing?

I would be a little wary of that pumpkin and the winter squash unless you've got a huge amount of space. They spread out yards in all directions and swamp all the other vegetables in sight. (as I found to my cost).0

ahhh... I read in my book that the squash, courgettes and pumpkin need 2ft of space each way, is this right??? I haven't planted the squash or the courgettes out yet but I have planted the pumpkin in a ft and a half wide pot, but that obviously isn't going to be big enough, think I'm going to have to dig up the garden!!!! Do squash and pumpkins need canes to grow up? What I was thinking of doing was digging 2 ft out in front of the fence, then planting the pumkin etc, with the squash etc all 2ft spaces beside eachother, so 3 sides have 2ft space but the 4th side wont have anything planted in front of it except grass.... do you think this will be ok as in is it enough space and will it be ok with grass directly in front of it??? Or should I plant everything up against the fence so they has 2ft space in all directions apart from behind them thinking that they may grow up the fence, or am i being too opptimistic (sp) It is very confusing, I can't say I have ever even eaten squash or pumpkin before! Stupid I know!

I have planted mostly everything else in pots, apart from the broad beans, carrots and tomatoes.
The tomatoes are doing wonderfully by the way, 6 out of the 9 plants have flowers on
