Jeld-Wen Oak Slide and fold doors

Hi,

We are thinking about putting these in our new extended kitchen diner, available from screwfix in the 4.2M width for approx £2.5K.
We were thinking about putting double french doors initially, but these look so much better.

Does anyone have any experience of these, the quality, look, etc, its quite a big outlay and we would like to find out as much as possible before ordering.

Thanks,

Esh

You can view the door itself in a lot of B&Qs also at the Homebuilding and Renovating shows that go around the country. It is widely available as well so well worth shopping around for. You'll find them available through lots of builders merchants also through some specialist online door & window companies (I think we looked at a company called Doors & More) The Screwfix price on the 2.4m set look competitive but it was 2 years ago that I was looking at them so prices might have come down generally with increasing popularity of this type of door.

From what I understand they aren't solid oak but are veneered. They look lovely in the flesh but we opted for uPVC folding sliders as at the time Jeld-wen didn't offer any wider than 2.4 metres and we ended up matching them to the rest of the house anyway.

    Thanks for your response.

We had a look at the ones in B&Q and although they were not the same as the ones in the screwfix catalogue, we got a good idea. They looked nice, and Jeld-Wen now do 4.2 and 4.8M sizes with the biggest one at less than £3K which is a lot cheaper than other co.s I have looked at on the web.

I am a bit wary though as these are softwood doors and even though they come with a 30 year warranty against rot and fungal infection, hardwood would have been a lot better, but these cost a lot more money!

out of interest, can I asked where you got your uPVC doors from and how much do they cost?

do you have any pics of these by any chance?

    Thanks,

    Esh

    http://slideandfold.co.uk/ Fab company.

I think they were £2100, taller than average doors.

The ones on Screwfix are reak oak veneered and unfunished too. We ordered the 2.4m ones (I think) when they were on offer last year and got an additional 10%/15% off too. They have been fitted and look great - we are having a window to match. If you want to see what they look like (in a semi-finished environment) just let me know.

Thanks both for your help on this.

Doozergirl, the doors look great, and I am liking the white inside/oak outside look!

Did you install yourself, or did the co. also install for you?

Latecomer, yes a link to the pics would be useful, thank you.

I have just rang screwfix, who have a 20% discount on these oak fold doors at the moment, and both the 3.6 and 4.2 are unavailable at the moment, until mid-august  so I need to find another co. asap as my builder needs to know the size for my new extension!

We paid someone to fit them for us, cheaper than the company we bought them from.

I hate it when things are out of stock for ages! Why don't you print off the screwfix price and see if someone else will pricematch for you? Will B&Q pricematch if there is a screwfix store nearby perhaps? Or Jewson might do them, I bought our Jeld-wen stairs from them...

I'll get some pics uploaded to the blog later and post a link. We actually got the finished ones (sold as Smoothfold Oak) as the normal ones were out of stock at the supplier. We didn't install them ourselves - our cowboy builders did it but our new joiners have fixed them. They are about to remove them and re-install as they are at the wrong height so I'll see how long it takes and ask them if there is anything technical about the installation.

I have been to Selco and B&Q but its the manufacturer Jed-Wen who have supply problems.

I have contacted slide and fold and the cost of the uPVC doors are approx £200 more than the Jeld-Wen Oak fold doors, but I cannot wait until mid August for delivery.

Have you gone for the cheapest u value on the slideandfold or another option? We opted for a better u-value but the second or third option as you start spending a lot more for something like a .1 difference in u-value on the top option.

They have two different types of PVC that they use now, one is cheaper than the other as well - there are so many different combinations for these doors.

Have you spoken to them on the phone as Debbie there is incredibly knowledgeable and helpful - she put together quite a few price options for the windows we ordered recently.

And do ask for an extra discount - you won't get loads (they are genuinely cheap for what you get, because they manufacture, you're not paying a middle man to flog you the things) but if they are trying to beat the Jeld-wen price I'm sure they'll come down a bit.

Bear in mind that they are made to measure for you so you're not fiddling around trying to make a quite inflexible opening fit the doors and exactly 4.2m. The doors will fit what you have/what you want exactly.
