Not sure I understand your post but if there is gas and electric connected to your new house I think you will find that there will be a supplier already there.
If it is a new build then the builder normally registers with a supplier as they will need to use the gas and electric. If a used house then the old supplier will still be there.
You can initiate a switch immediately but it normally takes about 6 weeks. But make sure you contact the old supplier immediately to give your details.
A possible exception is if it is a repossesion and the gas and electric has been cut off.
    Sorry if I have misunderstood.

Yes i do already have a British Gas as the supplier for both electric and gas at the new address but what i wanted to know is does it mean i will have to stay with them for now or can i switch to someone else immedietly?

    OK that clarifies it.
I hope you contacted Bg when you moved in and gave them your details, including the meter readings.
Yes you can switch immediately but as I said in my earlier post it can take up to 6 weeks to complete. In that time you will be a BG customer and receive a final bill from them when the switch completes.
As to who to switch to your best bet is to go on a comparison site such as energyhelpline. You will need to enter an annual kwh usage, you may not know that in your case but to get an idea enter roughly the national average figures of 3500 electric and 21000 gas (assuming you have gas CH). This will give you an idea of the cheaper suppliers but obviously not your future costs.
    Hope this helps.

Thanks very much that was helpful! :)
  • Where you switch depends on what you want. You can switch as a new occupier to eny supplier you want. DO you want to pay every quarter.or by DD. Do you like doing every thing on line, make your decision and then check through a site like Uswitch, It will depend wher you are so make sure you put in your post code. The only problem you have is you don't have any history and so that makes it difficult to compare.
If I was you I would phone up BG and ask what is their best Tariff to suit you. they will have the consumption history for that site, ask them to check and tell you the best deal. You may have to agree to stay with them for a year but then you will have some history to check on a consumption site.
    Hope that helps
Let me know what they say and good luck
