I'm quite disappointed to find out this is about gardening, after reading the title. :)

It may work is the answer.

Lotus-eater, think about lawn mowing instead;)

I did a home trial many years ago of all sorts of things and Vaseline was one of them, worked fine until 2 days of rain, then needed to redo.
We get a lot of rain, so wasn't my fav product.

Copper tape...(ebay is good for it) worked well all season but only lasted 1 season.

Crushed egg shells worked very well.
I put down some £land weed suppressing stuff around each plant in its pot, put egg shells on top of it, this stopped them vanishing into the soil which they did after a few waterings/rain.
12 eggs to a plant was the min, 24 eggs was fab.

I had a local baker at the time who cooked fresh bread/cakes each day, he agreed for a few weeks to put all his egg shells into a pot for me but I had to collect by the end of each day due to H & S, no way could we get through enough eggs in the few weeks in spring that I wanted to get them onto my pots.
