On Incapacity thinking about doing Avon?

Hi there, I'm currently on incapacity benefit and DLA and hubby is employed full time, however we are really struggling to make ends meet every month, so i thought i'd do Avon for a while to help us out. However i'm not sure how this affects my IB and DLA. Also do i have to register as self employed to do it?

Thanks in advance for reading this :)

Be very, very careful ... a) you cannot make any money while on Incapacity Benefit without benefits permission .. and b) you are deemed to be 'off sick' so if you can do Avon selling the Benefits Agency will assume you could have been working and remove all your benefits and maybe back date the 'grab back' too .. sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings ..

I've been stuck on Incap for the last 17 years .. the rules are Draconian ... I too started as an Avon rep .. thinking I could stock up with some cheaper products .. but was advised to stop immediately ... your life simply isn't your own under benefits rules when on Incap .. it makes me so very angry to find £££thousands are still fraudulently claimed by all and sundry ... yet if I should even think about getting just a few pounds extra to help with Christmas or whatever I'm guilty of defrauding benefits ... and I just know I'd be the one to be found out ...

Hope you find a way around your money problems soon ...

It sounds as if you aren't so much angry about people getting away with fraud, rather than the fact that you don't think you would get away with it too.

According to this you are allowed to earn up to £93 per week providing you do less than 16 hours a week. But then it goes on to say you can earn up to £20 a week too? Bit confusing

It's called Permitted Work and you don't need any permission either

You are entitled to work less than 16 hours but earn no more than about £92, it's called 'permitted work', you can apply for this through the Shaw Trust. You are allowed to keep all your earnings for the first 12 mths, then £20 per week after, although you can reapply for the scheme again.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

Agree surely if you are well enough to do Avon, you can get another job too?

Avon can be quite well paying it depends but it is also very hard work, traipsing around delivering, collecting, catalogues and orders, more taxing than an office job for example.

Hi I'm sorry but i don't agree, I have several severe permanent illnesses (which i'd rather not go into on a public forum) which mean I cannot work, this has been supported by receiving IB and DLA. I'm not joining Avon to traipse around the doors etc, merely to sell to family and friends and earn a little extra to help us out a a very challenging time.

Thanks for the info everyone, the rep is coming to chat to me this afternoon, I'm then going to phone the DWP (or whoever i need to speak to) and run it past them before i sign up to anything

When we asked about self employment and IB we could not get an answer even via the shaw trust.

Permitted and support permitted are through an employer.

Selling Via ebay would allow my husband to work as much or little as he wanted so when he was really ill he could cut back.

    Hi again,

I've just spoken to a lovely lady at JobCentre Plus who said although i'd have to register it with them as permitted work, they have quite a lot of people who do Avon, as long as it does not exceed 16 hours a week and earn more than £93 a week. So I'm going to listen to what the Rep has to say then if it sounds good i'm going for it!

Now, would i then have to register as self employed? That bit confuses me!

Yes you have to register as self-employed for any self-employed work.
