Sky Dish - any use without a subscription?

I've just bought a house in which the previous owner has left her Sky satellite dish and box behind for me to use.
Are there any free to view channels that can be picked up on it? I'm not really interested in pay TV. I have a digibox, but in this property it won't pick up CBeebies or BBC 4. Can the dish help me with this, or is it of no use to me?
Thanks
Martin

Hi!
You can get a freesat card direct from Sky for £20 - this is the Sky freesat website: http://www.freesatfromsky.com/

If you don't want the dish up anymore, take it down and you have a big wok!!
Sorry! I know that is useless to you! But when I saw your topic I thought you meant other uses! (I will shut up now!!)LBM 12.09.12 - £53K in debt.
DFD - 11.07.2019 (OMG).
New DFD is 28.10.2018 due to paying the absolute maximum.
Thanks to everyone on the DMP forum, and to SC for helping me out of this huge hole.0 -
I just checked out what FreeSat has to offer. It looks good at first glance i.e over 120 TV channels.
Then you discover 27 of them are Shopping Channels
18 of the so called entertainment channels I have never heard of and 37 channels are 'Special interest'
Which leaves practically nothing different from the existing freeview offering
Can't believe its so bad!0 -

My house also appears to have a satellite dish (well, 2 actually but I think 1 must belong to the upstairs neighbours). I have no idea what it's connected to, if it works or where it enters the flat as there's no box or anything. Is there any point keeping it up there for decoration or could it be of any use?

if someone has an old sky set up then this is perfect for them, cheaper than paying for a freeview box and no need to upgrade any ariels.
Also if someone decides they dont watch enough sky or wants to cut down there costs then just cancelling there subscription will let them use the set up and card to receive freesat(freeview)0 -
I have the orginal sky digital box with mini dish never use it though.
