I have the Anytime package with BT for my calls. I usually only make UK calls but need to call a business in USA. How can I find the cheapest way to make this call?

    I recommend 18185 - 5p connection and then ½p/minute at all times.

However, the easiest way to find out the cheapest way is to use the MSE International CallChecker (guess what, 18185 comes out top of the list).

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Does the business you are wanting to call have an 800 number?

If so get yourself a skype account, with a skype phone or mic and the calls are free.

Or you can sign up to 'precaller'.

You then call an 0845 number, free if within your BT included 0845/0870 minutes, to listen to some dire music, and, incidentally, build up a call credit. Once you've got a credit, you can call an 020 number, inclusive with your BT package, and then connect to the USA (and most other countries, and UK mobiles).
