When new Tesco's opened here (we have had a few in past few years!) they would have posters in the windows of the stores with info on how to apply a few weeks/months before they opened.

Same thing around here too. :)

Tesco extra means it's going to be a huge store ... and so will need a large number of new employees.

Even so, Tesco will probably get 10 - 20 times more applicants than positions they have available ... and they often hire some local office space in order to process all the applicants prior to the store opening. Local job centre was aware of this location too.

You are also correct in that they usually do this months before the actual opening date to (a) ensure they recruit the applicants they want and (b) to ensure they are adequately trained before the big opening.

In all likiehood they need to wait until the key positions are filled such as store manager; department managers; HR etc otherwise there is no one to complete the recruitment.

HR may get involved in recruiting key personnel at store level but I doubt they get involved in recruiting the shelf stackers beyond assisting in ads etc

I had a similar issue - a Morrisons is opening near me in the autumn, and the JCP website listed various manager vacancies including an Administration Manager position. I phoned the 0845 number to get more details (why do they have this !!!!py system?) and was referred to Morrisons recruitment website. But that website didn't have any of the vacancies listed when I looked, and still hasn't had to this day. I reckon they had them listed for one or two days, got bombarded with enquiries and applications, and then took them down - without telling the JCP to stop listing the vacancies.

thanks for replying it's because i was sent one written in comic sans with no logo (tesco or job centre) on what so ever! it seems too infomal plus it had my middle initial on which i don't use on application forms. the envelope was handwritten and the writer made a mistake on it - it looks unprofessional.
  • This is odd - I recently applied to four Tesco stores in Leicester, after phoning each store to be told they accepted speculative applications. A week or so later I got a phone call asking me to come to an interview. It was a withheld number, the person did not give a name or say which store - I was so pleased / shocked I didn't think to ask! I immediately called each store back to find out which one, and each store said they knew nothing about it. What's going on with Tesco then? There doesn't seem to be any way to contact Tesco other than the stores - I tried emailing Customer Services and got a response, but no result - they said they also tried to find out which store on my behalf, and each store said they had no idea and weren't recruiting.
