Help please: clay soil in raised beds

MIL INSISTED :mad: on having raised beds filled immediately created and would not wait for decent soil to be purchased and delivered. Outcome is that she keeps losing any sign of growth from the primulas, pansies and impatiens she insists on planting there.
She wants lots of colour, we see pinky brown soil with pathetic looking plants in isolated spots across the bed.:embarasse
Any advice re planting would be hugely welcome. Many thanks

Get some well rotted compost in and perhaps add a little sharp sand to lighten it0
