Transferring Sonycam Hi8 on to DVD

Upgraded our camcorder a few months ago and am now left with a number of old Sony Handycam Hi8 (CCD-TRV69E) tapes. Still have the original camcorder and would like to transfer the material on to DVD.

I have seen that a number of firms are able to do this at a cost, but I guess that it's quite a simple process. Any suggestions?

There doesn't seem to be any lead supplied to plug into my Dell laptop (with DVD rewriter). Is this the easiest/cheapest method, or is it best to finally fork out for a DVD recorder and transfer that way?

Any guidance would be appreciated. Many thanks.

A DVD recorder is less hassle, and if you get one with a firewire input, then you could use it with your new (presumably digital) camcorder.

Alternatively you could buy one of these:

but no firewire for the new camcorder..

  • What outputs has this camera got? Sorry, tried to look on the Sony website but failed dismally to find anything in English about it!

Apologies if I'm using the wrong terms, but it has an A/V connecting cable - 2 jack output (yellow and black) with 2 jacks at the other end (again yellow and black) to plug into the TV. Hope that makes sense.

Any idea what cable/adaptor would be required to plug into the computer USB?

Alternatively, any suggestions for a reasonable DVD recorder (with the appropriate sockets). Can someone explain what a firewire input is, please.

Thanks again. And thanks for all the help to date.

see the links in my first post for the adapter.

firewire is a method of getting your new digital video into a pc or dvd recorder without losing any quality, without it you can only use composite video, (or possibly svideo), which give a lower quality analogue result.

You can't plug A/V into USB I'm afraid. Totally different electrical characteristics! I use a PVR which which I input s-video from the camera and record onto the HDD. The PVR has a dvd writer which is then used to burn the videos onto dvd. To be honest you might find it cheaper to take your tapes down to somewhere like Jessops who will do it all for you.
