Yes you can buy an xbox from the USA and it will play in the UK, you will probably only need to change to plug on the power supply as I dont think you will need a step up/step down convertor but I could be wrong.

Please note however the xbox 360 games are region encoded to play in Asia, USA, UK etc but places like play asia sell games that will work on a USA machine and some games have no region encoding on them but by buying games from outside the Uk you are subject to duty charges for anything you purchase over £18

Oh, one thing to watch out, remember your total duty allowance is £145, is customs catch you you will have to pay VAT and Duty on ALL the goods and stuff you bought in the States and brought back with you.

Will the power supply be OK in the UK? The US electrical system is 120V 60Hz and ours is 240V 50Hz.

Nope, it has an external Power box, so you could just replace that. You could jsut buy a stepdown box, but as it's likely to pull a fair few ams a new PSU might be cheaper if you cna get them easily

Sort of.. The Xbox has the facility to region lock games but it's up to the developmer to decide if they want to use the facility. Depends on how big the game is and there distribution setup. If there a smallish company they might just not bother so they can just do one pressing and ship them anywhere. Either way you may not be able to swap games with UK friends.

DVD playback will be region locked to the USA.

If you have a media centre PC and use this as a media centre extender there may be issues with UK / US tv signal compatability too.

Theres also warranty issues, if your using a non standard PSU or a voltage dropper and it blows I doubt the US repair centres would touch it.

Looking at bestbuy's website the Xbox goes for $399 for a basic bundle. Walmart have it for $350, Remeber thats before tax, add 12% or so for tax, (depends wheree exactly you buy it). You can get the basic system for £199 in argos at the moment, so unless the rate up a lot there not a lot in it.

apparently a friend of mine told me that when she is coming back from the states she just takes the labels off of all the clothes that she has bought, so that customs cant do anything???? dont know how reliable this is though!!

This is fine- but get rid of receipts! I normally post them home from USA (in case I need to return later on - my wife's brother lives in NY).

They can get you if they find receipts on you - so get rid!

I'm sure both suggestions are fine, however you are technically committing fraud, whether you get caught or not is another matter!

However bit tricky trying that (removing, labels, etc) with an XBox!

A LOT of 360s go faulty as well, we've had customers with 3 or 4 faulty xboxes since they came out..

  • It will also play in NTSC format, and we use PAL.

Most newer TVs can handle both, but it's something to check ;)

As for tax, you can send it to yourself from the US as a gift, and it's tax free I believe :D
