Hi, I am looking for a second hand car. How would I know if it had been a cat C or D write off?
Does it say on the V5?
I have a fear of being ripped off!
Thank you

HPi check or ring an insurance company for a quote...they'll soon tell you!

Assuming the log book was issued after it was written off then it will normally (but not always) say if it's a cat C, log books never mention cat D.

HPI should show either up but obviously there is an associated cost. I suppose it depends on how much you are planning on spending, and whether you are buying dealer or private.
