The Relatives and Residents Association is the only charity focusing entirely on giving free, up-to-date and accurate help and advice on care homes for older people, including the unfair funding system. It provides information on the confusing maze of payments, human rights, standards and inspections. It lobbies for care to have the same free status as the NHS. Care homes can charge anything from £300 to £1000+ per week. People with assets under £21K may be publicly funded. Others are forced to liquidate assets or “self-fund”. This means paying for care for dementia or Parkinson’s and wherever people can’t cope at home. Yet, if they had heart disease or cancer the government would pay. We also fight for higher standards, for a better paid and qualified workforce. We are a tiny charity and desperately need funding to continue to provide our high quality day-to-day helpline support.
