Most of the cheaper end of the high street pcs would be more than adequate for email and web surfing, all I'd say is avaiod the 'internet ready pc' type adverts you see all over the place, they are often made from parts salvaged from ancient PC's. I was looking at the PC packages tesco had the other day and was quite impressed at what you got for the price.0

Keep an eye out for Aldis offers too if you have one near you. For people who want to play games / do anything demanding with their computers they're rubbish, but for someone who just wants to check their email and browse a few sites every now and then they'll do just fine - and they're pretty inexpensive.DFW Nerd No. 140

Yep unless you need a larger screen then a laptop would be good and take up less room.0 -
Provided you know what you're looking for, why not try the Computers For Sale section of your local newspaper, and ask the seller to run Belarc Advisor on it, and print the results off for you? This program details the hardware and software contents of a PC on three or four pages, and you can see whether it's got what you know is needed. You can get an idea how old the PC is from the date of the BIOS. (Try it on your PC first, so you can compare!).
Then it's just a matter of getting an ISP, a printer, and so on...!

There's an identical model and price on the Dixons website.
What do you think is meant by the comment on the Woolies website: "Standard delivery £4.95. This item incurs an additional delivery charge of £12 per item." £24 delivery (plus VAT), for the usual two boxes (monitor in one, system unit plus 'the rest' in the other?). If that's the case, it bumps the price up somewhat...

Huge thanks to you all for the advice it was much appreciated:T Went out and bought one today from Comet.£299 the Acer as advertised in woolies. We did consider a laptop but as its for my disabled father in law a desk top was better for him comfort wise.Just got to get it set up for him now.Think we are going to set him off on dial up first just to see how he gets on then maybe upgrade him to broadband as an xmas gift. Thanks again everyone0
