VR and claiming benefits

A colleague has asked what impact taking VR will have on ability to claim benefits. Can anyone help?

Will she be able to claim job seekers allowance? Tax credits? Housing benefit?

Anything else? If impacted, how long?

Thanks for your help

    Jazzy,

It will depend on the wording of the dismissal letter, if it is worded that she took voluntary redundancy then she will be entitled to nothing, if it says she was selected for redundancy then she should be able to claim whatever is due, but what she is due is dependant on savings etc.

This is completely incorrect. Voluntary Redundancy does NOT affect entitlement to Job Seekers Allowance.

Voluntary redundancy can only arise where someone has to be made redundant anyway, so someone would be adding to the jobless numbers. It makes more sense for the system to allow a volunteer to take it as generally those who either do not need the income, those who can most easily get another job etc will take VR.
