I wrote to the income tax office on 4th May and have yet to get a reply, is this normal or should I write again?

Yes its normal. It can take 8 weeks for them just to get round to opening up the letter, such is the backlog and the mess they're in. I've been waiting for a tax refund since March 2009 and have just been told that even though they said it would be paid this month, due to "enhancing the computers" it might now be November but there's no guarantee of that!0

Thanks, I am trying to claim back some income tax, I don't suppose they will be in a rush to pay me.
