British Gas Fix & Fall offer

Has anyone else been contacted by British Gas about their Fix & Fall offer? I'm a bit confused as to what to do.

This is how it works (I think):
For the first year, (until 30/12/07) the prices for electric are 5.290 per unit for the first 1143kWh per quarter, then 2.988p per unit. Gas is 18.086 per unit for the first 225kWh per quarter than 9.395p per unit after that.

Year 2 - electric prices are 5.207 for the first 1143kWh per quarter, then 2.941. Gas is 16.046 for the first 225kWh per quarter and then 8.336. These prices are between 31/12/07 to 31/12/08.

Apparently, there are no standing charges and by paying by direct debit I get a discount of a 10.3% up to a maximum of £18.25 per quarter. On the electric, by paying by direct debit I get a discount of 4.8% up to a maximum of £4.75 per quarter. On top of this, I get an annual dual fuel discount of £15.
Now, we all know that prices are probably going to keep going up and up, but I'm with EDF (formerly Seeboard) at the moment, and their gas prices are 4.127p on dual fuel for the first 5860kWh per ANNUM, then 2.596p after that. The electric is 14.56p per unit for the first 900kWh per ANNUM and then 8.63p after that.

To me, it seems to make sense to go with British Gas, as there's no tie-in period and I can leave them whenever I want to. Prices with EDF are bound to go up another couple of times in the next 2 years, so by going to BG I at least know what my bills are going to be until Dec 2008.

Or am I being thick?

Have you tried entering your annual kWh consumption figures into ukpower to see who comes out the cheapest? Obviously it depends on your region but I have never found BG to be competitive.

I think you have transposed gas and electricity prices in the opening 2paragraphs - but we know what you mean!!

There have been a number of threads on this, and it has come up in non-connected threads.

Ther have been some strong opinions on the merits of the Tariff and frankly it is just a gamble - nobody has any idea how it will work out; but we will know in Dec 2008!!!!

Personally I would go for it, but that is only my guess.
  • This is really a question of mid term security versus short time savings! LOL

I love the simplicity of that!
