Paying for something in local currency vs sterling?

Hi All

I have just come back from a holiday and was curious about something when I paid for my hotel bill.

The gentleman asked if I would like to pay in the foreign currency or in sterling when paying with my UK credit card.

Does it matter which one I choose and if so which works out better?

The same applies when withdrawing cash with my debit card abroad (I don't do this often and is mostly when I need more cash) as some banks ask the same question.

Many Thanks for your help.

  • As a rule-of-thumb it's better to specify local currency. MasterCard and Visa generally will give you a better rate-of-exchange than the merchant.
