Blank brain syndrome? can someone work this out for me re finances when paid 4 weekly

Hiya everyone :j Im having one of those days when my mind has just gone blank!?!! Basically this is the first year when everything, minus food and my dp petrol money were everything is paid by DD.My dp gets paid 4 weekly so essentially in one of the pay days in October every year we didnt end up paying for most things iykswim as he got paid twice and most bills are only monthly.

So i cant figure out where we would get a "free" month like we normally do or where some money would be freed up.

PAY DAYS-1st and 29th october.

DD's
1st-christmas savings account
6th-house insurance/dp mob
8th-sky
15th-all utilites,loan,rent,my mob,council tax
28th-car insurance

Hopefully the rain has bored someone else into staying in and doing a budget and can help me

Thank in advance
from brain dead mum of 2! :D

Sorry not going to be of any help, but by OH gets paid 4 weekly too, I've never been able to find the mysterious 13th payment, it all seems to blend into one.

i used to get paid every 4 weeks and it usually worked that if i got paid twice in one month one year the next double pay month would be a month earlier the year and so on iykwim?
I used to get a calendar or my mobile phone calendar and mark every 4 weeks so i knew when i was being paid....

The best I've ever managed to come up with it putting aside the extra as it comes along, you'll have bear with me here :D

So for example, this month OH's car insurance is due on the 16th June, 2 days before pay day so is in this months budget (call this period May/June), money is sitting there in the bank waiting for the DD. New budget period (June/July) then starts on the 18th June, next month his car insurance is due again on the 16th July, which is actually pay day so will come out of July/August budget, soooo, I get to put the £45 for June/July car insurance into the savings account :T

I go on like this throughout the year, and at the end of it (if I haven't spent it ;)) I should in theory have the equivalent of the elusive 13th pay packet in the savings account.

If I too were paid 4 weekly and all bills were paid 4 weekly I'm sure it would be easy, but it just doesn't seem to be for me. I'm sure it's because we're basing a monthly DD budget on a 4 weekly pay day

(why to supermarkets insist on paying 4 weekly????)

  • Thanks again Peachy, i have just done a brief budget for oct1st/29th and your right looks like it will end up coming in, in drips and drabs so to speak. Its a shame as we used to have quite a lot of money for christmas because of the 2 oct payments!
Id quite like to know when the exclusive 13th payment which would be for rent will crop up as thats nearly 500 pounds
I think that may have to be left to find on a day when im feeling less brain dead!!!

Last year I had a calendar that had the whole year on the back. I drew lines across tying up pay periods with mortgage payments, I got the extra in January last year.

Ahh!! The free month for 4 week pay!

It doesn't quite work that way - not for the whole budget in one month. But for each individual bill, there comes a month in the year where you get paid twice between paying that bill out.

So in September, payday was 03 - after you paid the christmas fund and with pay again on 01 October, meaning that the Christmas fund payment for october came from 2 pay packets, so you should end up a christmas fund payment in hand.

The next payday is 29 October and the one after is 26 November. So for the car insurance payment on 28 Novemebr, you have had paydays 29 October and 26 November and you should end up a month's car insurance in hand

And so on through the year, yougo backwards through your list of DD's and every so often, one of them is covered by 2 paydays.

2 things to do if you possibly can. Firstly, budget for a whole month from 4 weeks pay. You cannot go wrong, because every so often, a regular bill is covered by 2 paypackets. The worst is Council Tax, but even with this, budget for a full instalment from each month. If the due date is 01, then you get an instalment in hand in October, the same as the Christmas fund, and you get 2 further instalments in hand between January and March.

Secondly, spread your payments evenly around the month, so that you are never far away from an instalment on something appearing in your hand. So for next year, consider paying the christmas account on 21 of the month, because the gap between 28 and 15 means that there is a long period where nothing is coming back into your hand.

Cos T/C and CB are also paid 4 weekly what I do is sit with the family calendar and write on it each 4th week on the day it's paid T/C or CB then look thru to see where the 2 payments in 1 month fall.
