    The lower 'element' will have separate E7 and 24 hour elements within it. They CANNOT be a combined element because this risks back feeding any storage heaters on E7 only circuits during the off period via the 24 hour feed - not necessarily the case on all installations, but very possible on most.

    I think I have worked out the problem now. Switch 1 must only control the shower - that would explain the increased water flow when its active. The extra heat was illusory.

    The MCB is definately broken, probably caused by a corroded top/on demand element.

    Sigh. If only the previous owner had actually told me what the switches all did!
