How Often to Change Oil?

As the title says.

The car asked for a service in March, which was done, it is now asking for an oil change, I imagine we've done about 4,000 miles since the service.

It's a Toyota Lucida (import), 4x4 diesel.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

Usually it's 10k or a year, which ever comes first. No matter how low the mileage it's better to get the car checked and at least an oil change done every year, as a lot can potentially go wrong in a year...

I change the oil annually regardless of how many miles although the service indicator in the car (Mk4 Golf) also has me changing it annually even though I probably only do 6-7k per year.

Oil is cheap, engines are not.

...although all services should include an oil change, so if one was only done in March they may not have reset the service light to wait another year or 10k until the next one. The interval should certainly not be 4000!

But, flagging the need for another oil change after 3 months and 4000 miles suggests there is a problem somewhere that needs investigating.

Could be anything from the quality of the last service to a fault in the service indicator.

    ETA: cross posted with Ti.

Fair point Landy, they may have cross-threaded the sump plug and it's been leaking since service or the pressure's been low?

Get it checked out, but it shouldnt need another oil change unless something's wrong.

No signs of leaking oil, and oil levels seem fine. P'raps I should just change the oil myself?

Won't do any harm but I think you still need to know why the oil change indicator has come on.

Yeah, just changing the oil wont solve the issue unless you can turn the service light off yourself too!

Has the speedometer been converted to MPH properly?

The oil change light on them triggers at 8000 kilometres (which is approx 5000 miles).
