oh yes! ask me ill say yes lol
i think itd be easier this way then you can go to the jewellers together and she can choose what she wants
she will have to know what your budget is, its only realistic in this day and age of a relationship where the two parties each take responsibility for money issues

Would your girlfriend be happy with whatever ring you got her or is she the kind of person that likes to be in control? I picked my own engagement ring because I didn't want to wear something (hopefully) for the rest of my life that I wasn't overly keen on, if your girlfriend is like that then you may want to give her a token ring when you propose and take her to pick the actual ring together. I know it's not very romantic if she knows the price but think of it in the way that you're going to have to share financial problems/responsibilities later on in life and it's a good way to start really?

Also be aware that what she says she likes now might change when she actually has something on her finger.
Strangely i thought i wanted a 0.5ct ring until i tried one on and it just looked ridiculous on my tiny hands, so ive got a 0.33 carat ring instead.
And i really, really liked trying all the rings on and getting pampered etc, so im another vote for proposing with a token ring and choosing one together. But only you know what your girlfriend is like and if she would enjoy choosing her own ring or not!!

I have a friend whose husband chose her ring and she wore it for 2 days before she could build up the courage to tell him she hated it. They swapped it for a different one that they chose together, so thats not the end of the world either!

I want the ring to be something that my gf wants to wear for the rest of her life and have pride in showing off. So I think letting her choose is the the only way to go. As you say what she wants could be totally different when it is on her finger. She is a great girl and won't expect a ring requiring a security guard by her side. I just didn't want her worrying about the money side of things. I'm sure a ring in the £1000 to £1500 range (or cheaper if something else catches her eye :)) will get her something really nice.

I'll buy one of those Haribo wine gum rings and get a case at a local jewellers. I'll propose on a Friday night so that we can do the rounds at the jewellers on the Saturday.

I'll let you know how it goes. :j

How about making a ring from tin foil....the haribo idea is lovely but believe me she will want to keep it forever and im not sure if haribo last that long!
If you are a little creative you could even include some diamante or crystal "stones" in the tin foil setting to resemble the eventual ring...that way you are designing a ring that will mean everything to her so that you can choose the real ring that costs the money together making sure you are both happy with the purchase

A "token" ring sounds naff to me.
I was really blown away by the fact that my OH picked the engagement ring for me - it made the proposal even more special because I had a beautiful ring to put on my finger right away.

i agree a token ring is a great idea.
my H2B told me i could have whatever ring i wanted up to £2000 but the one i chose was just under £400, its the perfect ring for me.
if shes going to wear it for life then it has to be something she loves
    Good Luck!

    aaw thats 'sweet':rotfl:

i forgot to say i dont like my engagement ring(i know 'how could i forget'-i forgot what happened an hour ago:o) anyway
its a gold one with a sapphire on it
i still wear it and have done for 9 years, were finally getting married in 2012 but i want a silver wedding band so will have to make the engagement ring bigger to fit on the other hand!
id have liked to have worn them on the same finger though
i love the sentiment its just the ring isnt what id have chosen

I bought the ring today. It's a platinum ring with a princess cut diamond. I chose a smaller carat but a better colour, cut and clarity. Hopefully I will pop the question in a couple of weeks.

Just one question though. The jeweller gave me a certificate of guarantee but it is not very specific. It just says that it is platinum, a princess cut and the weight. Should it be more specific with the colour grading, clarity etc? In the heat of spending so much money I didn't question it at the time.
