How to do wallpapering?

In an effort to save as much money as I can renovating this house and only paying professionals when I have to; how do I wallpaper?
I've never done it before. I've stripped the ghastly woodchip coated in layers of paint from the walls. The previous owners obviously liked drilling holes in the wall! I've also had to have some re-wiring and more sockets added so there has been chasing in the wall for those. the sparky wasn't the best making-gooder (but an excellent sparky and plumber).
So my idea now is to put up lining paper and paint over that. In the sitting/dining room, i've had a wall taken down between the kitchen so there is no natural end to the room iykwim? Where do I start to paper and where to finish? Oh and how to calculate how much paper I need please?

some good video guides here http://www.homeserve.com/videos/wallpapering
if you are just lining allow around 4 drops per roll - you can always get more if you run out0 -
I am in the middle of hanging
myself. Have combined lounge/diner with arch and require 16 rolls
Watching the video is great , words are not as a effective.how to calculate how much paper I need please?
Cut all the drops first , before you mess up the paper table with paste.
Lay the paper face down :rotfl: on table , up to half a doz , at a time.
I keep the paper from rolling back up with a very large loop of knicker elastic.
I have started to use a plastic wallpaper smoother rather than the old hanging brush.0 -
Another I do , if you are confidant about the electrics. I take the light switches and outlet plates off ( must insert the words... after turning the elec at meter , for the H/S brigade). I find it quicker and get a much better result than trying to cut round the box.
Tie a piece of sting across pasting bucket , to have a place to rest pasting brush.0 -

You think 16 rolls is bad,you try doing my hall stairs and landings.
It takes 38 rolls,I was suicidal by the end of it and hated the wallpaper I was so sick of the sight of it :rotfl:.0 -
Halls and stairs , a different job altogether. You spend more time constructing a place to stand than actually hanging the paper.
38 rolls ! I think even mixing the paste is big job.
Its about time I stopped wasting it on here , have pasting table calling.0 -
A slightly less drastic approach (although will not give quite as good a finish) is to slightly unscrew the sockets and switch plates so that they allow you to put the paper behind them.
When papering I will then paper over the socket and cut a cross from the corners of the plate and peel back the 4 paper triangles created. These can then be trimmed down and the edge tucked behind the socket and the paper smoothed out.

Bloomin eck Mrs T. How the devil did you manage to get to the bit where you have to hang yourself over the edge of the bannisters to reach?

I know you said you are going to use lining paper . But have only recently used BQ value embossed paper , very good stuff, about £3.50 a roll. This would cover better than even a thick lining paper if you have rough walls.
If you still go with lining paper , spend a little more and get a 'thick' one.
PS I can post as I'm having a tea break0 -

I think i might have nightmares if i were to have textured paper again . It's been bad enough getting the woodchip off. at least with plain paper it won't look like it's been papered.
glad to hear you're puttihg down your glueing brush for a cuppa :beer:Mortgage free as of 10/02/2015. Every brick and blade of grass belongs to meeeee. :j0
