OS Wedding Confetti

Morning!
My brother is getting married in two weeks time and I need confetti - the ceremony is in a wood so confetti needs to be bio-degradeable.
Two questions
- do people still throw rice at weddings (or is this too os!?) if they do is this environmentally friendly? ie ok for birds etc
- can I make my own - honestly will I be able to collect sufficient petals or whatever and dry them in time (we're in the country so that's a start I guess!). If yes, how do I do it and what petals can I use??
would prefer the packet of (fake :money:) Uncle Bens option!!
Thanks gang will check back in a while after school run x

Uncooked rice isn't good for birds (and not particularly biodegradable as its pretty tough stuff!), although it is still used.
You have plenty of time to dry petals if you have an airing cupboard and/or warm dry weather!
Roses, paeonies, lavender and all sorts of flowers can be dried. For things like roses & paeonies, separate the petals out and spread them on kitchen roll on trays to dry out. For stuff like lavender, you can dry whole flower heads, either spread on trays or by hanging bunches of flower heads by the stalks inside a paper bag. Either way, you'll need to rub the flowers off, as a whole lavendar flowerhead hitting the bride might not be very welcome!0 -
Thanks Greenbee - interesting about the rice - I won't use that then if not good for birds.
I'll get the kids to collect petals if it ever stops raining ....
No airing cupboard so can I toast them in the oven??
Thanks again

do be careful you're taking and drying petals only - stamens etc of some plants are lovely and colourful - and will be equally so if thrown over a bride's dress on a wet day - you will not be the favoured guest if the bride has yellow streaks on her dress!0

Thanks Ubamother, will monitor confetti production carefully x
Will it be ok for the flowers if I remove so many petals? will they still get pollonated (sp?) properly etc.

what about taking some bubbles instead? That's what people are doing for our wedding, and it'll make for some lovely photographs

Thanks Nicifer-noonoo it's a nice idea but being a MSE I don't actually want to buy anything and also I think my 3 and 4 yo daughters would end up scraping over the bubbles, getting it in their eyes, spilling it on their bridesmaid dresses etc etc.
I'll think about it x

If you have someone who could do it in the morning you could get some bunches of carnations- loads of petals! And then break them up so you have bowl of petals that can be past around for people to take some to throw.
How about rice paper? You could punch some shapes out of it, it must be something birds could eat and I know it just goes mushy in water so not going to stay for long in the woods.0 -
i was wondering about using fresh flowers without drying them like the poster above, how about cow parsly flowers, with the little flowers pulled off to throw? there's loads about in the hedgerows herenov grocery challenge, £.227.69/300, 9/25 nsd: , 7 Cmo, 10 egm.
Me, 10 yo dd, and the dog. all food and drinks, in and out, plus household shopping.0 -
Thanks Gingerbiscuit and poppy-glos The wedding is in UK and I'm in France so won't bother with the fresh flowers idea - too much faffing about.
Am itching to pick all my peonies once the rain stops!
Thanks again for your help

Enjoy the wedding - in a wood sounds wonderfully romantic :happyhear
