Sister owns a petrol 2002 1.6 Vauxhall Astra. She does roughly 4k miles a year. She is a member of UNISON. She is looking for a breakdown cover. Needs to have recovery to any destination. Does not need home care. Had a look at AA, RAC, Britannia Rescue, Greenflag. Only Britannia rescue offers discount for unison member. The cheapest i can find is £70 from AA and Rac. Other are more expensive. I am aware you can get cashback for AA, RAC and Greenflag from Quidco. Have used moneysavingexpert.com which came up with companies that i have not heard of.

Any advice?
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D

Can she pay all recovery costs upfront then reclaim ? Autoaid £37 http://www.autoaidbreakdown.co.uk/ You can use them to organise assistance or do it yourself, claims normally take around 14 days max.

Since you have an Astra, you could join the Astra Owner Club, only costs £15 first year, £10 after that, but will gain you loads of discounts. In particular, cheap insurance with Adrian Flux, who offer breakdown cover on the policy. The breakdown cover if I recall covers roadside help, relay and EU cover.

You dont have to have an astra to join the club or use the insurance. I am a member of the mondeo club and use their
insurance, My mum got her golf insured with them using the same club code.

If your sister has tesco vouchers she could use those to get breakdown cover from the RAC.

I've got the all singing all dancing cover for the whole family for £72 worth of vouchers

My thought here is don't just buy on price. Just tried to join the AA and after experiencing the worst customer services I ever have, had to get a refund under the Direct Debit Guarantee Scheme. Even though they had given me a membership number and taken the money they could not find my membership details and just stonewalled when I called their customer services team. Just as well I found out by checking when the details didn't arrive in the post - if I had relied on the membership number they gave me I never would have got help in the event of a breakdown. They seem to have admin problems at the moment - I guess something to do with a new system that generates membership numbers in a form the customer services folk don't recognise. Couple this with an appallingly rude customer complaints team and you have a recipe for disaster. So my vote - join the RAC!

Go to quoteline and get a £59 annual all singing all dancing policy from Europ Assist.

As instructed sister looked through her insurance documents and found that she can get a discount with RAC. She will ring them tomorrow.
