polycarbonate roof or glass roof conservatory

After contacting loads of companies and getting various designs we are having a conservatory built by a local builder. Like all the others he has quoted on using a 35mm Polycarbonate roof. I have heard and read various things on roofs and lots saying glass roofs are miles better and Polycarbonate are loud in the rain. Our garden is North facing and the sized will be 4m x 3m. The conservatory is going to stretch us and the final agreed price is just at our limit but I keep thinking should we change and go for a glass roof. Does anyone know how much extra roughly we should be charged and are glass roofs really that much better than 35mm polycarbonate. Any help would be great.

I recently (Dec 2009) replaced my polycarb roof on our conservatory for a glass one with argon gas filled units/self cleaning glass with a blue tint.
All I can say is I would never have another polycarb roof again. The glass one lets in so much light and it is great sitting in there and seeing the sky. Also it is so much quieter in the rain. The main reason I replaced the polycarb with glass was for better insultation in the winter months so that we could use the conservatory all year round. Ours is also north facing. Can't comment yet on the insulation properties of the glass roof yet as although it was installed last December we didn't get the inside completed until March 2010 so didn't use it during those months in the winter. We also had the walls plastered inside to make it more room like. Currenly it is my favourite room of the house.
BUT it wasn't cheap to have it replaced !! I would expect it to add at least 2-3K onto your costs depending on the spec of the roof/glass.:footie: Rando0 -
We priced our conservatory with both types of roof and the glass one came in at £3k more. From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!0

If you can afford it go for the glass roof everytime
We fit conservatories and the glass roof is an absolute must have polycarb looks very poor in comparison:D0 -
Sorry to hijack your thread, but can anyone give me a rough price for a 29m2 UPVC conservatory with dwarf wall and tinted glass?
Thanks0
