  • i have a 3 year old who has high functioning autism he needs constant around the clock care and supervision. i was awarded the higer rate of dla and carers allowance last june. when my son turned 3 in october i applied for mobility they sent me a decision saying i wasnt entitled to mobilty and they decreased my higer rate to middle rate in march this year. i have appealed and they requested new reports from my peadiatrian and i was told today that they are sticking with the decision. im going to appeal again but its so frustrating as i know im entitled to these benefits. i have enough to worry about with all the care and support i need to give my son and with all the appointments i attend for him. i shouldnt have to be put through all of this stress and worry i totally empathise with anyone else who has been through this and i realy hope i get somewhere with this appeal.

A child can only get HRMC at three and not the lower rate normally given for outside supervison for autistic children (and children with similar conditions) and for a high functioning autist the lower rate mobility componant isnt paid till the child is 5.

If your child dosnt need round the clock care/supervision for some of the time you wont get HRC.

I'm a bit confused JoJo with your comments. You say your son is austistic, but you make many comments about YOUR DLA, YOUR mobility, YOUR higher rate being reduced & you know that YOU are entitled to these benefits. I know autism is a difficult condition to manage, but I cant quite get my head around why money would make this easier. As far as I can remember, when my children were three, they also needed 24 hr care as does any 3 yr old, but thats what a mother /father does isn't it?
