I'm still not sure what to do regarding Working Tax Credits, etc.
I am currently working 16 hours per week and receiving WTC together with doing my Uni course. Come December, I will be unable to work for a few weeks due to an increase in Uni hours and so will lost both my wage and my WTC.
I have been offered weekend work elsewhere but for an agency who apparently do not fill out the necessary forms out for WTC and therefore I will lose out.
A friend has been told that the only way around this is to go self employed and pay her own tax when necessary.
It's all very confusing and I'm not sure what to do.
Any advice greatly appreciated.0 -
Hi
I have just finished my nurse training.(Diploma)
Have you applied for?
· your bursary
· plus dependents part of the bursary
· The childcare part. (as you will be working shifts weekends on placement) If you have not been told your placement hours. I think you need to tell them the hours you would need childcare if you were doing 12 hour shifts. Most uni's I think say you need to do 30 hours in placements. 7 as a study day or uni.
· Also you can claim tax credits you ring them as soon you have a letter from bursary stating how much money you will be getting.
· Get a letter for uni to say you are a student so you won’t have to pay council tax.
· If your child is at school if you are not working she will get free school dinners.
· If I was you I would try and get this all in place before you need to start placement in December. Placement can be very tiring and would it would not be advisable for you as a parent to continue working thorough your placement time.
Hope this helps.
Good luck with your training its very hard work but worth it in the end.:j0 -
forgot to say about access to learning fund. They normally ask you to apply twice yearly so check which dates they may be at your uni.
If your income in low you may get some money off them you do not have to pay back.:j0 -
Thanks Barbie, your reply is appreciated.barbie_babe wrote: »Have you applied for?
· your bursary Yes, and received my first payment
· plus dependents part of the bursary Yes, 1 teenager
· The childcare part. She's 14 so this is not applicable
· Also you can claim tax credits you ring them as soon you have a letter from bursary stating how much money you will be getting. Currently receiving WTC as I'm working 16 hours until I start placement
· Get a letter for uni to say you are a student so you won’t have to pay council tax. Done
· If your child is at school if you are not working she will get free school dinners. I've been told that because I'm getting WTC not CTC, I'm not entitled.

Thank you for your advice. I'm trying to weigh up what's best when the time comes that I cannot work.
I think during placements, as you say, I'll just not work at all of course.
When my Uni hours increase, I'll work at the weekend and although I won't be entitled to WTC - as I won't be doing 16 hours (and even if I did, the Agency won't fill in the forms) - I should hopefully still be entitled to CTC.
Hopefully, that will all work out as planned!0 -

From what I've been told, this is mainly for people who have been awarded a fairly low bursary and are, for example, paying a mortgage - which I am not.
I don't know whether this is correct but I will look into it to see if what I've been told is right.0 -
If you still have to pay rent alone you may still get access to learning fund.:j0

Does anyone know if, when you give up work for studies, you have to pay back any W&CTC ? Is this worked out for the year or pro-rata? ie: Is what I will have received up until the date I finish work correct, or will it have to be re-assessed?
I'm definitely finishing in a few weeks and although I may do some Agency work, it (probably) won't be a regular 16 hrs per week.
Thank you0
