Canon MP492 Refilled Black Ink Still Showing Empty

Hi have the above problem, the printer still works but the refilled cartridge is showing empty, can i reset the printer? I presume it still sees the cartridge as empty via code on it. Last time, when filling the colour, i had a error number and was able to reset, cant remember how i did it, pressed the red triangle button i think!

any ideas??

cheers in advance

Most (all?) current Canon MP-series printers have a chip built into the cartridge itself, and it's this that tells the printer that the cartridge is empty.

From new, the printer should refuse to print if any cartridge reports that it is empty. You can override this by turning off ink level monitoring and it will then print, but the refilled cartridge should still show as empty. AFAIK, no Canon printers include a function to reset the ink cart chips.

You can buy chip resetters for many models for about £20, which will mean that the refilled cart will then show as full - a typical High Street ink refiller will have one and will do this as part of their service.

No, it will make no difference. The chip counts the number of times each print head nozzle has "fired", and so knows how much is left. Your spare will show the level correctly until it's empty. The refilled one will continue to show empty.

Fortunately, the makers of "compatibles" fairly quickly get to copy the chips, so you should be able to get chipped ones for yours soon, if not already available. The chipped copies for my MP610 cost under £3 each, and you can get them cheaper if you buy complete sets at once.

Could you give a link for these? Cheers!

This gets you a set of 5 for £9, or 7DayShop do them individually at £3 with no brand, or slightly more expensive with Inkright brand. Shipping within the UK is free.

Most of the canon printers, that are of the MP / IP models can have their ink levels reset when you have refilled the cartridges but you must first put them in maintenance mode.

The MPTool / IPTool only list a small range but they generally cover a lot of them.

I myself have an MP180 and have to put it into maintenance mode after I refill the inks, you then run a program called MPTool and reset the inks to show as full again, you can then continue as normal.

I don't know if it's me but I think the life of inks are shorter after you refill them but haven't fully tested this because I abuse my ink when I'm printing :rotfl:

The reset procedure for the MP180 is as follows, could be similar for others...

    • Pull power cable from back of printer
    • Hold down the on/off button and push power cable back in whilst still holding on/off
    • The on/off should be constant green when cable inserted, when it is push the reset button (circle with red triangle)
    • An orange light will light up on the printer
    • Computer will then install a low level printer for maintenance only (see bottom note)
    • You run the ink resetter tool
    • When both reset, pull the power cable and reinsert then switch on as normal
    Notes:
I discovered a problem that if you rename your printer, it will install again, the original printer name must be left. Canon MP180 Printer (or something like this) otherwise it won't work.....

Other models go into maintenance mode, by doing a procedure of the power / reset buttons, some say to hold in power button. Press the reset button 2 times, release the power button and reset button, go through the menus, then press the power button 4 times. Or something similar to this.
