Car Insurance different owner to name on insurance

Hi
Quick question, helpful advice appreciated.

If I own (as in legally own it outright and am the registered keeper with the DVLA) a second car that I don't use (and so don't insure) can I long term loan it to a friend for them to insure in their own name?

I have been told that the insurance has to be in the registered owner's name but is this correct?
Or is it just a condition of some insurers but not all?

Thanks for any advice.

Normal motor insurance needs to be taken out by the owner or keeper. This is also needed for taxing the car.

Why not get the insurance in your name, put the friend on as the main driver and get him to reimburse you for it.

its quite possible to insurer a car that you dont own - i have done this in the past through direct line

this happens a lot where, for example, a car is leased

Some companies do it, some do not.
For example I wanted my husband to be insured on a motorcycle that I owned.
ebike insurance said no and I had to give hime the bike and register it to his name with the DVLA (simply wanted to avoid the hassle to be honest).

With certain insurers I know you can have insurance not in the owners name e.g. Sheilas Wheels, esure (whome I've done quotes with recently).
They do ask specific questions about whether you are the owner, registered keeper and the relationship.
Providing the company does it and you provide the correct info then it's fine, but NOT ALL companies offer it e.g. ebike do NOT do it.

I haev recently done car quotes with Esure and Sheilas wheels directly on their website (and other companies e.g. more than, sainsburys) via comparison sites, so it's certainly possible.
they had a pull down for relationship and it wasn't only for spouses.

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

Quentin - I don't really want the insurance in my name as if there needed to be a claim with this car that would then affect my own insurance on my main car. Plus friend has a no claims bonus that we would like to use.

Have spoken to a couple of brokers this morning who have suggested that she won't be able to insure it as she doesn't have an insurable interest in the vehicle.

Looks like I'll have to talk at particular insurance companies to see if I can find a way round it. I guess I could put her as the registered keeper as long as I could legally still be the owner of the vehicle.

I guess I could write an agreement that says I am the owner but have agreed to lend it to her for a year, so that I could prove I own it if necessary.

Think I'll start with shelias wheels, cheers lisyloo.

Make sure you read the qeustions carefully, just in case I missed something.
I believe spouses do have an insurable interest, so it might be different for others.

BTW - Whilst sheilass wheels is aimed at women, they do insure men also.

A quote from DirectLine Ts & Cs

l Hire-purchase, leasing and other agreements
If we know that your car is owned by someone else, we will settle
any claim by paying the legal owner before we pay anything left
    over to you.

    seen pretty clear to me

I have a policy with DirectLine for a leased car -just so you know, they've said they will no longer insure cars where the policyholder is neither the owner or the registered keeper. Applies to new policies from now and to myself from the renewal date.

I am the owner and was the main driver on my car. However, my son has just been moved from a named driver to the main driver for the next few months and the policy is with Direct Line. When the 3 months are up I have to contact them to change myself back to the main driver again which is what will happen as my son will become a named driver again. Had no problems with arranging this and it cost no more.

Before being accepted for a direct line policy, you must agree to this statement:
The vehicle is owned and registered by you, your spouse, partner or civil partner(not business partner)at your address and has not been modified or altered in anyway (including wheels, suspension, bodywork and engine) and you or your spouse, partner or civil partner (not business partner) will be the main driver. Please note your documents will state that the policyholder is the legal owner and registered keeper of the vehicle.

You can do it - if you try comparison websites there is an option for who the legal owner and registered keeper are. Some companies won't like it and therefore won't quote you.

I did hear a rumour of it being more expensive if you're not the legal owner, hence that's partly why i'll be transferring the car i drive from my dad's name into mine just before i renew this year. Don't know if that's true though.
Excuse any mis-spelt replies, there's probably a cat sat on the keyboard
