Trying To Find A New Bank Account - Struggle & Desperate

I declared myself bankrupt at the beginning of May, for me this was the second ‘official’ time I have declared bankruptcy, the first was some 10 years ago. All for personal reasons, not due to a business and only involving me, most debts run up because of illness / sickness etc... and stemming over a period of serious illness.
However things have massively changed in my life, and declaring bankruptcy for the second time was a major decision and a risk I took, on the understanding I wouldn’t or hoped I wouldn’t struggle to open another bank account afterwards.
However seems it’s not going to plan, the bankruptcy has been so far straight forward and the OR has been immensely helpful and understanding and I’ve been informed I may be discharged sooner than the 12 months.
However I need a bank account in order to apply for my NHS Bursary, I am due to send in my application ASAP, I am starting my studies in September for Nursing, and they will not pay my bursary any other way other than into a bank account by BACS!!!
I have temporary transferred my benefits over to a PO account because surprisingly my old bank froze my account, upon hearing of the bankruptcy, despite the fact I owed them nothing, but we know this means nothing!
I also really need a new bank account to re-set up my Direct Debits, etc... because I am such an organized person, and these were things I kept on top of and I don’t want to fall behind and things...
I applied to Barclays last week, went through the application process with a women I had an appointment with, she was very helpful, 101 questions, but rang today and I’ve been refused!!! She’s told me to apply to the CO-OP, but I actually applied to them before my currant bank and they refused me, my credit rating is crap, I know this... it doesn’t help I suppose that I moved house 1 week after I went bankrupt (I was in the process of moving)
Any idea’s, trust me I’ve learnt my lesson, I am never planning on buying or borrowing on credit again, besides my mental health is more than stable these days, Mental Health Nursing, is the next route for me...

Hello and welcome MiniatureLil, Are you on the Electoral Roll as this could explain why you are failing to open a Basic Bank Account?"If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride"

Hi..
I know how you feel im also struggling to open a basic account, co-op refused me just last week and barclays had previously refused me before my bankruptcy - I did explain the reason behind it too....
So far the only accounts ive found available are these managed accounts that actually charge you around £12.50 per month to operate....its not ideal but at least its an option...
If you or anyone finds somewhere that will allows bankrupts an account though id also love to hear about them!
Fingers crossed for you that you'll be able to sort something out0 -

I was at the old house, as I voted in the general election... the move might have screwed it up, but I've registered for Council Tax at the new place!0 -

I would check to see if you are on the Electoral Roll at your new address first, if you are then I would ask them why they are refusing you an account x"If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride"

A little off topic but still closely related.
I called co-op last week 2nd June and said I wanted to open a cashminder account. He asked me why and I said because I'm very close to going bankrupt! Was it wise of me to have said this? Anyway, I gave some details over the phone and he said I'll just put the details and give you an answer. Thankfully,he came back on and said I'd been accepted. :T I still haven't had anything come through yet though so can't help but worry. With a cashminder where there's no OD I can't really see a problem why you'd be declined. What is this managed account? where you pay £12 or so a month (what company is it?), I guess that will have to be something I look at should I encounter difficulties with this one.0 -
Rabb you are talking about Think Banking - I've never had any dealing with them however somepeople on here really really dont like them.
its a shame you have to pay £25 set up fee and £12 per month.Total Weight Loss - 28lb and countingAD 17/11/20100 -
Hi rabb, we told them we were going BR and the account has been up and running 7 months now, going to be staying with them even when discharged, so don`t worry you will be fine.:pB&SC No. 298

when you applied to the coop, did they try and process an application for the cashminder basic account? or did they try and put through a current account? might be worth checking...0
