back dated car insurace

I have a car insurance with aviva which expired last september. Because I was using train to travel to work place, I wasnt using the car at all and didnt renew it, didnt receive any letter from them either. A few days ago, I realized my car's tax is going to get expired, its MOT also expired and I cant park in public road anymore. So I sold it to a trade in a very cheap price. To drive it there, I called Aviva, give them my previous policy number and the guy on the phone said its insured , you can drive it away. After selling it, I have now bought another car, called them and update the car details and the insurace.
Now I just got policy documentation of the previous car and its saying, my next policy renewal is at september 2010 which means they charged me from sep last year till now, when I had no insurace, didnt use the car at all, whose MOT expired anyway. I could have gone to another insurance agent easily and get a new one. Just because I was with aviva, I called them and now they are charging me for whole last 9 months for nothing! I had no policy papers at that time and if I got an accident surely I couldnt claim anything! Now I called them and they said they will look into it and hear what conversation went between me and that guy. Can anyone provide me some suggestion what can I do now?

What makes you think that you wouldn't have been able to claim under the policy?0 -

I didnt pay anything for the insurace at that point and didnt receive a insurace certificate from them. so if i did drive the car say in april 2010 and got in an accident, how could i claim for it, as i didnt pay for insurace ?0 -
If it was on the public road it'd have needed insurance still. Where was it parked while you considered it uninsured?eager2know wrote: »...I cant park in public road anymore.0 -
I am a bit confused here, was my car insured even if i didnt pay them or call/correspond with them? if i make a claim in case of an accident after 3 years, would they then charge the premium for all 3 years?? if i dont have any paperwork, i think the only thing it can mean is that i am not insured.

Its possible they auto renewed it and had your card details on file. Check your credit card or bank statement for the renewal month in 09 and see if some money was taken or not.
A couple of companies have done that with me in the past because I didn't respond to their paperwork and say "no thanks" so if you didn't get the paperwork you wouldn't have realised.0
