purchased vax rapide cleaner - it's wrecked my carpets

I recently decided to invest in a carpet washer ( bought the vax rapide one £149 - from comet)

Get it home and it has huge stickers all over it saying don't take it back to the shop - call our helpline.

Have used it for the last four days and it has left my carpets patchy.

The carpets were cream and I'll admit noticeably soiled, hence why I decided to buy it. But I'm very disappointed with how patchy they are.

I'd like to return it to the shop - but they are just saying phone the helpline.

Any advice.

I just used this cleaner over the weekend and I've got patchy areas too but I think it's because I used too much water in some areas and so it has taken longer to dry. This has resulted in water staining. Could this be what happened to you?

My parents bought one of these - I found it worked pretty well, on several conditions:
    1. You vacuum the carpet thoroughly first with an upright with a beater bar (to loosen the dirt), then a powerful cylinder (to get as much dirst up as possible).
    2. You use the cleaner several times - the first time the carpet looks mostly cleaner, but patchy as it has brought deep dirt up. Second time round it was much better.

That said, I think getting the professionals in is easier.

My advice is that if you do phone them try to get a different number to the one that they give you. I had problems with a Vax carpet cleaner (not the Rapide whch I have now and is not too bad) and rang their "help"line. The man on the other end was very rude and kept putting me on hold. He accused me of breaking the machine myself and said that it was only meant for hard floors (it wasn't). When I got my phone bill the call had cost me nearly £10 and that was on a Saturday! I'm still convinced that he just kept me on the line by talking carp for the hell of it.

Next time I'm getting a Bissell

    Hi sarahevie,

My name’s Andy and I’m from Comet.

I was sorry to learn of the problems that you have been experiencing when using your Vax carpet cleaner.

As Vax act as our repair agents in this instance our normal procedure would be to register the fault with the Vax technical support line on 0844 412 8457, as it is a much quicker process. Once the fault is confirmed they will arrange for a courier to collect your carpet cleaner with a view to a repair, and we would anticipate this process to be completed within 10 working days.

Alternatively if your carpet cleaner is under 28 days, upon confirmation of a fault VAX will provide you with an authorisation number which will enable you to return your cleaner to your local Comet store for an exchange.

Should you have any problems with this please email me using the below link to contact via email with further details, so that I can look into this further for you.

You will need to register a few details with us to be able to send your e-mail in.

If the carpet is really dirty, it may take more than one cleaning to make the carpet look clean, it could be that the patchiness, is because the patchy areas were dirtier than the rest, What you should do is clean these patches with a carpet mousse, let it dry vacuum then shampoo the carpet with the cleaner once again.

thanks everyone - just wanted to give an update

Took cleaner back to the shop it was purchased from, they called VAX straight away, as these products have to be authorised by the manufacturer to return - Vax offered either a replacement or a refund.

    Purchased 3/6/2010
    Problem rectified 10/6/2010

It turned out to be a faulty cleaner, actually was causing power surges apparently, we hadn't noticed!

Thrilled to bits with Vax and Comet.

They are patchy still - we've booked a professional. Decided to do this once every six months.

Vax accepted that our cleaner was faulty after testing it. It was them who said it was causing power surges.
