Glasses

Options
Hi

Just wondering what others would do in my situation, I have been and bought some verifocals £300.00 worth so had the best, Now I understand that time is needed to adjust to them, had them 5 days so far, however I can not see clearly at all close up on any part of the glasses.I have had a retest to check the prescription, which they say is correct, but there is no way I can get any clear focus at all, text looks like its been over typed 3 times soft focus and thats the best I can get. Trading standards say not fit for purpose, opticians they say prescription is correct not there problem but will change for bifocals. Which is ok if I guess if I wanted bifocals. They wont give a refund.

So any advice is most welcome.

I recently got my 3rd pair and had a hell of a time trying to get used to them. I was convinced the prescription was wrong as I never had any problem with the other 2 pairs.

In the end it turned out that they were adjusted wrong, if they don't sit correctly on your nose then you look through the wrong part of the lens and they just don't work.

Try getting the optician to check them out again or if you got them from a national chain try another branch. Having said all that though, some people just can't get on with them

They are fit for purpose if they are built correctly, it is not their fault if you cannot get on with them. Do as the above poster said and ask for them to be rechecked again, if you are still having problem then maybe look to see if you can get a compromise to change them to single focal?

I would go and get another eye test. And then, if no problem showed I would get the glasses checked against prescription.

I ordered some varifocals from a well known National chain.
The first pair were disastrous, couldn't see properly.
On returning to the store they said they would get them sent off to be checked, came back the alignment was wrong.
great thought I, all OK now.
But they weren't. Still no good.
I went back, feeling more than a bit apprehensive.
They rechecked the order on screen and found that the staff member who had inputted the data had done it wrong so the wrong prescription had been made up.
    These then came back.
And guess what? Still no good.
    I kid you not.
So this time they did a retest and discovered the test was badly done and the prescription was wrong anyway!!:rotfl:
So when their 4th attempt was returned and seemed OK I said 'I do not expect to have to pay after all this trouble.
They agreed and my glasses were complementary in the end!:T
Decide what action you require and what you would be willing to accept and go tell them.
    Don't be put off.
if you lived near me I'd come with you.:D
    Good Luck.

Did the same optician do the eye test, make the glasses, and do the fitting? (rather than taking the prescription elsewhere to be made up).
If so you have paid the optician to correct your vision, not to make something that doesn't do anything for you.
If you cannot read with what they have made, they are at fault.

Tell them you will be taking the glasses elsewhere to be checked, both for your eyetest and to check the glasses are made to the prescription correctly, and take it from there.

(Varifocals can be hard to adjust to, but there should be one spot in the middle bottom that should be correct, then it does get worse as you look up or sideways though)

Varifocals are good up to a point, if you are short sighted, then when you reach about 40, you will start to lose your near vision as well, making reading papers dificult. As you short sightedness is probably stable after a number of years of myopia, unfortunately your near vision will continue to weaken at this time. This makes the first pairs of bifocal, vari focals dificult to get on with.

The cheaper version of varifocals can only give you a more direct vision to read close up, like looking through a tunnel. This is normal. The more expensive version widen this window. Your optician would have gone through this with you and ensured a proper fitting.

After getting the glasses they take time to get used to, as they are diferent to your previous pairs, to see distance, you have to learn to look through the top part of the lenses, and for reading, the lower half of the lenses. There is an area of ambiguity in the lenses, where the near and far correction 'blurs'.

Unfortuanately, I know that my near vision is now failing, I will again have to fork out around another £400 in 18 months time to further correct my vision, I have no choice, though my driving glasses are now over ten years old, when I wear them to watch TV, I cannot see the remote control! If you do not believe me, get an old pair of your glasses out and do the same.

Again thank you for the replys, I am waiting until the end of the week, if no better I will go for another eye test else where, if they confirm same as prescription then I will just accept its me.
At about 4ft to distance is really good, they work well, but the sweet spot close up is not there, yes there is improvement but no clarity.
So I do accept it could be still me.I cant see close up but can see distance with no problems with out glasses.

Fingers crossed, I paid for the best and really hoped they would work.
