Moving into New Home

Ive moved into my new house and i need some advice. Ive been asked to ring British Gas and give them the meter readings so they can send a bill over to mine. Ive also been asked to get the name changed over. Fair enough.

What i would like to know is, if i get the name changed over to mine, will that tie me in a contract?

Im still doing some research as who is the best provider for me, and I would like to switch in the coming weeks. So i dont want to be tied in with BG and would like to leave my options open.

What would happen? At the moment the previous tennant was on the BG standard tariff for dual fuel

Providing you just phone up, give your details and the relevant meter readings and don't sign up for anything 'fancy' - e.g fixed price util 2011 or similar you're not tied into any contract.

When you take over an existing supply, you are on a 'deemed contract' and you can move after 28 days.

Correct, you have to become a BG customer before you can switch, in order that someone pays for the gas consumed from the day you move in until the day you switch.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • All before is correct but make sure you have your readings from the date you moved in. Also if this is a new build house, make sure you have the meter number.
You dont know what your usage will be so make sure that you are not stuck on Standard Tariff, but be careful there may be a payment to get out of the really good deals if you want to leave before 12 months.
For an average Gas and Electric user who want to pay by DD then Eon Fix on Line 8,is the best. You put your readings on line when they email you and view your bill through your account.
Oh, I dont work for Eon by the way

    Good luck
