Oddly enough I had just started watching "The World's Greatest Players" freebie DVD that came with the Sunday Times when I read your comment. Here's their top 20 players if you need some inspiration to pick a team:

    20. Buffon (GK, Italy)
    19. Villa (Fw, Spain)
    18. Cole (Df, England)
    17. Lahm (Df, Germany)
    16. Ribery (Md, France)
    15. Maicon (Df, Brazil)
    14. Robben (Md, Netherlands)
    13. Essien (Md, Ghana)
    12. Gerrard (Md, England)
    11. Schneider (Md, Netherlands)
    10. Iniesta (Md, Spain)
    9. Casillas (Gk, Spain)
    8. Lucio (Df, Brazil)
    7. Torres (Fw, Spain)
    6. Drogba (Fw, Ivory Coast)
    5. Kaka (Md, Brazil)
    4. Xavi (Md, Spain)
    3. Ronaldo (Fw, Portugal)
    2. Rooney (Fw, England)
    1. Messi (Fw, Argentina)

The only blatant omission from this list, imho, is Milito the Argentina forward who won Inter Milan the Champions League. However, Maradona really doesn't like Milito so he'll probably be on bench warming duty in South Africa.

Why do you want Cole in?

England aren't going to get many/any clean sheets...

Edit: silly me its the USA first game.... Maybe
    Not Again
  • Points are for goals, goal assists and clean sheets for defenders and goalkeepers.

Seeing as you have 30 transfers to make, the team u finish with will look nothing like the one you start with. So it's prob best to just focus on the games within the 1st week when selecting your initial team.

Well that's what I'm gonna do anyway !!!
Are the points awarded just on goals made. Im thinking since England is in an easy group then two england strikers to start would be best and so on

You dont have to make 30 do you?
    Not Again
  • Not if you don't want to.

You have 15 to use in group stages, then another 15 in the knockout stages.

I've been through every list of "best looking footballers" on the net. I'm now very disappointed that the Ukraine didn't qualify. If any of them aren't all that, please let me know, I'm surfing on a little netbook and so can't see the pics too well. I can't have any on my team that don't pass muster.

Great way to pick a team! Much more thought involved than my way - click on the countries I've heard mentioned in the same sentence as the word football and then randomly click on two players from that country!

You can even get them to pick a team at random for you if you want.

Have you put up a team?

Yep, I thought that I would give everyone who knows what they are doing a good laugh! :D

    Is Van Persie fit?

I will look him up later on big screen computer at work. If he fails to pass muster I have a lovely Argentine player waiting in the wings (well not in the wings, he's a striker, but ykwim).

FWIW I'm very disappointed that Ginola and Clooney look alike Greek goalie Nikopolidis have retired.

Is that Tevez? I did notice you had Carragher in your team icon7.gif

I think they have missed a trick by not applying values to the players as in the premiership edition.
