Child/pet friendly weedkiller for paths?

Hi experts!

We have recently moved into a new home and the garden is lovely, but it has block paved path all around the perimeter.

Weeds and moss are starting to grow on the path and on the patio - too small to pull up by hand but they look a mess - they will look terrible if we leave them.

We have two toddlers (2yr 6m and 18m), a border collie and a rabbit that spends most of the time out of her hutch munching on the grass.

What could we use to put down that would be safe for all of the above?

  • Most spray on liquid weed killers are safe around animals and kids as long as they don`t eat the green matter you`ve sprayed!! but get the one that kills back down to the roots then sit and wait a few days you`ll see the weeds die off and those one will be dead forever i use "tumble weed" but they are all much the same for the same types if you know what i mean.

    Thanks for the reply!

You say they are safe if the kids/pets dont eat them, but the rabbit does? She can usually be found munching on some dandelion leaves or such like. Still ok?

  • No if you have a run i`d leave the run in one place and not spray in there move run once old treated weeds have completely died off and no signs of them left ! or use a lever type tool to ease up the dandelion and roots sorry can`t remember the name of the tool ,it worked ok but with the occasional snap of the root that would have regrown of course!! best of luck defo keep buns away from weed killer ,Personally i`d leave some dandelion in the grass as it`s good for their urinary system i was told this by my vet when my rabbit had a urine infection

If you have (or can borrow) a hot-air paint stripper gun, you can use this as a weed gun. It works in the same way as an old fashioned flame gun; just point the gun at the weeds for a few seconds (you don't need to burn them, just heat the vegetation so that the water content within the plant 'boils' and kills the foliage). They'll shrivel-up and die within a day or so.

Boiling water works on small areas quite well.
