Low skill job ideas - not customer service

I was a SAHM up until recently and am working in a call centre doing customer service. It seems they were only employer that would give me a chance after 15 years out of work.

I HATE it. It is boring and the customers are rude. I do not want to do this for much longer as my mental health is suffering. I barely have the metal energy to do the most basic of housework and this part time job. Two weeks ago I broke down cried on the phone to a customer and was told off. Fair enough, but the job is really getting to me. I have been off work since then with a "cold" really stress, but need to go back tomorrow.

Any ideas for jobs that are not customer service or care that would take someone who has been out of workforce for so long. I need to make £100 a week

Why have you ruled out care work? Lots of people love it, and at least giving it a go would get you out of the call centre.

In my experience, call centre work is awful, so I understand where you're coming from, but it's very difficult to get a job without any experience - customer service in a retail environment isn't as bad as a call centre, so you could consider that, as it links to what you're doing now.

Alternatively - cleaning or admin if you're IT skills are up to scratch, altho, I've seen many employers insisting 'experience is essential'

You could also consider returning to education / doing some voluntary work (if childcare can be arranged) as this would help you to secure a more fulfilling role in the future.

    Good luck

There's a load of low / un skilled jobs that are not call centre based.

Cleaner, litter collector, shelf stacker, shopping trolley collector, refuse collector, labourer...

    The list is endless.

What is generally involved though is physical activity ... as there are not many low skilled jobs you can do on your backside.

How about a drivers mate? That wouldn't involve continuous physical activity throughout the shift.

With a national minimum wage now almost £6 an hour for over 22's, you should be able to make at least double that £100 per week you need (based on a 35-40 hour week)

I will ech what most are saying in that Administration would be a good area to look at. Banks seem to be taking on a lot staff at the moment and not all of that is customer facing.

If you only need to earn £100 why don't you carry on with your job (or a similar one) but go part time? That way its only going to be 20 hours a week or so

I would love to do a non customer facing Admin role. That would be perfect for me. I currently do only work part time. I have been offered more hours (my boss seems to really like me!!) and I do my job well, but I hate it.

If I actually liked my job going full time would be so good for my family money wise.

I would imagine you would need to be very fit (lifting etc) and I am not very mobile myself.

I'd agree with that. I went from call centre to admin work 15 years ago (I'd had some admin experience several years previously). I couldn't deal with call centre work.. was constant complaints where I was.

There's probably some crossover from call centre to admin depending what area you are in.. e.g filling out forms, updating computer records, that's what I mentioned and I moved into sales admin in another part of the company. Plus, dealing with telephone queries.

Or as Chardonnay says, yes, voluntary companies, you could easily use your transferable skills.

    Good luck.

care work, I'm not going to be nosy and ask about your own disability(?) but not all care work is that physical. I work with a lady who does evening shifts (around 4pm-8pm) for a care agency and her role does not involve any physical care (that is done duering the day by higher paid staff. Her job is to go to someone's home, check they are ok, check they've taken the day's medication and get the night dose ready for them, make sure they've eaten during the day, make sure they've got something planned for dinner or make them a sandwich etc if not, aqnd generally just have a dup of tea and chat with them. Each visit is 30 minutes and she gets paid £8 per visit. She had no experience before but has been put through NVQs.
