Yes, I contacted my bank straight away and had a block put on my account, so no-one can do anything with it at the moment - not even me!

They sent me a form to my home address (so they could be certain it was me) and I have provided all new security info. They will phone me when they get it, and then I will log on and change my password.

I am also going to change my browser. Interestingly both firefox and IE were affected and re-directed me to the dodgy site, but google chrome wasn't affected.

Some virus probably just added an entry into your windows hosts file. Once the anti-virus deleted the virus the changes to the hosts file may have been left in there. Anti-virus software probably wouldn't pick up odd entries in the hosts file.

stator is probably spot on. Check that your hosts file is OK (should be C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts if you are on XP, otherwise see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file), then make it read-only (by right-clicking on it and marking it Read-only).

(Spybot Search & Destroy can also do this via the Advanced options.)

This is a great tip, thanks!

The only problem is when I go to C:\windows\drivers\etc and right click on hosts, it doesn't give me a check box for read only, it just brings up a list of the programs in there such as Adobe Reader etc.

I really want to do this as it will make me feel much safer on-line so if anyone can see what I'm doing wrong I'd be really grateful

    I'm on windows 7

    Thanks

EDIT - I tried doing this through spybot advanced tab but the checkbox is greyed out - perhaps this is only available on a paid for version?

When you right click, select Properties and then select Read-only :)

im glad you got it sorted out! but if cahoot said that they never ask for all 3 pieces of security information they are mistaken. they definately ask for it on the reset password page, i've just tried it and reset my password online by entering all my security info then a 4th question

Yes but this wasn't a re-set password page - as soon as I attempted to log in I was asked for all my security info. When I phoned Cahoot she went through it with me while I was on the phone and said that they would never ask for that info, and confirmed that this was a fake website.

Going through the password reset procedure is something quite different, that is not what I was doing.

i understand that, i'm just saying that there are circumstances when the cahoot website asks for all 3 peices of information even though they said they never do.
