A few weeks ago I got the new BT Infinity service, it is the cable (they call it fibre), whatever it is it has sorted out some problems that some of you may face. It is being rolled out across UK so you may not have it yet but you can check on their website https://www.BT.com/infinity.
So far I am getting an average 35Mbps download and 7.6MBps upload.
What does that mean? I uploaded 150MB file in less than 8 minutes. I downloaded a HD programme that was an hour long from BBC iplayer in 11 minutes, it does not download at top speed as I'm sharing that bandwidth with other people downloading from the BBC, so it is at their end and understandable. But still very fast.
Hopefully not speaking too soon but my connection has been more reliable, no dropping connection.
There is apparently no contention ratio, this is where your connection is shared with a group on your exchange so can slow down at peak times. My connection no longer slows down drastically at night.
One other thing the speeds BT quoted me were lower than what I'm getting, that makes a change. I've also been told it will increase this month with upload speeds doubling.
Nice to hear something good from a broadband provider.

my main worry would be the fair usage policy, if its anything like the other BT unlimited fair usage thats only 80-100GB a month which will be totally decimated in a few days watching full HD programs from BBC iplayer and then they will be applying traffic management which drops normal connection speeds to below 1mb anyways keep us updated as this will be interesting to find outDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
I'm amused they even offer a 40MBps service with a 20GB useage cap.....
comming to my area september this year..... will take another look around then (ie lots of gooogling for 'BT infinity problems' etc etc
) 0 -
Those are fair concerns and asked them about this when I got it.
Usage cap is 100GB.
100GB is a lot of data and even with streaming video would suffice for most people. Not all video is in HD. However, that is still approaching 100 hours of TV in HD.
I've had it for three weeks and been giving it a real thrashing and I'm not near cap.
You can call BT to check usage, although it would be better to check online.
Fair usage aside it is better than ADSL2+ services and they offered it to me for same price as I was paying before.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
ah right guess i wont be getting it then i must be one of those rare people who 100GB is way to little (a HD movie is 4GB at least for under 2 hours) so i would say the HD content estimation is a bit on the low side (although maybe not for iplayer) i normally try to go on 2GB per hour of good HD which would only give 50 hours but hey ho i can see how that would be enough for a lot of people, and i would oh so love the speed just couldnt make do with such low usageDrop a brand challenge

Think I'll stick with my BE 20mb (actual, "up to" is 24mb) properly unlimited use and 1 month contract [though they since changed the T&C for new customers, IIRC] . Hardly any websites give you that speed anyway, MS and Ubuntu are the only ones who I've seen max it, though Steam and iPlayer can come close. Only problem I've had in about 2 years is the modem died, though they were quick to fire off a replacement.
BT I never ever want to communicate with ever again.0 -
yes steam is a bit naughty some weeks
i think this last weekends steam fest took up around 20-25gb oh well just glad Sky's unlimited package is properly unlimited aswell Drop a brand challenge

There might be a solution if you need to download lots. Move to a business package, might be a little more but looking at the terms and conditions there they don't seem to apply a cap. With BT you can get business broadband on a residential line.
They have a fair usage policy for business but no mention of caps just mentions using inappropriately during peak times.
Perhaps same applies to other providers.
Is it worth paying a little more to not have to keep an eye on the cap. Just a thought.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
well myself i havent got the ability for the FTTC just yet although it is really good to here that people are happy with it so far but i have got a wait any which way, and i am looking forward to what will happen when other providers are able to offer their own packages based on it
but at the moment i am generally happy to pay £10 a month for unlimted 10mb connection (best speed i can currently get where i live) and on generally get through 250 - 400 GB a month
