I have a W reg 5 door 2l Vectra. I need to learn to drive in it and use it afterwards obviously. The car is worth £800 at most. We bought it and repaired the head gasket on it.
I have a son with Special needs but only get lower rate mobility DLA so this car is it.., no motorbility (altho my son has ASD and is very difficult to get out the house and walk, so the car is needed badly).
But car insurance quotes range from £900 to £3000 lol.
I have gone thru quidco to find the martin specified range of quotes., and do not know what to do. I can't learn to drive unless I practice (as well as do driving lessons) but I can't practice without a legal car. Altho I do get DLA.., it is spent on things that are needed for my son.., finding £900 a year is going to be very difficult. Its not possible to add me to anyone else's insurance (assuming this might get a lower quote) and I just don't know what to do to enable me to learn to drive. Things are fairly difficult financially as is.., even with the best budgeting.
Anyone have any ideas that will enable me to get this car legally on the road?

Have you tried getting quotes with another experienced named driver on the car, that will often lower the price. Are you getting tpft or fully comp, strangely fc can be cheaper. That car will be expensive to insure, learner driver in a 2 litre tank think of the damage you could cause, that is what it is all about. And don't think it will drop when you pass the test, you will then be allowed out unsupervised, even more of a risk.0

No I can't be put on anyone else's insurance .., I am not the sort of person that would ask a friend and I don't have any close family.
I have looked for fully comp.
Yes, I do realise its because I have no no claims bonus, no driving record and am a learner driver.., but it still seems rather high and prohibitive.0 -
Not getting you on someone elses insurance but having someone else as a named driver on your insurance. Who is going to sit with you when driving.0

Can you appeal the decision to only award your son the lower grade mobility allowance?
Perhaps ask them to reassess your situation?

You do know you have to have someone out with you who's over twenty one and three years driving experience?
You need to downgrade engine size to get cheaper quotes.0 -

...and if they qualify on the above add them to your insurance perhaps?0 -
lol I'm 46.., I'd have problems finding someone under 21 to go out with me lol. But yes, I am very clear on who is permitted to go out with a learner driver legally and have no intentions of doing otherwise. I'm a bit isolated here.., I'm not overly keen on adding my neighbour to my insurance and paying for him.., its doesn't seem to lower the insurance costs.., I guess paying for two drivers is just going to be more expensive however more experienced they may be than you.
I'm in a bit of a situation.., my OH has lost his licence and so we're not in a good situation. I am doing what i can to ensure I can get my older son to the places he needs to go (public transport around here is useless).., assuming I pass my test of course.0 -
Try Collingwood who can probably offer cheap monthly policies for you to learn, once you pass you will need to arrange cover with someone else though.

try a local broker for a quote as well but do not try Swintons0 -
£900 minimum at 46 for a 2l Vectra? I know you have no driving experience but do you have convictions backing up that quote, or do you live in a Favela?0

Agree about the adding someone with experience onto the policy.I added my gf who only has a provisional and it brought my rate down with some companies, despite me having a claim free history and no points.0
