Effective weedkiller for grass

Can anyone please give me some recommendations as I'm at the end of the line with my lawn.

New house build 2004. Turf laid by builders. I'm no gardener but I've kept the grass cut and applied some weed and feed. The weeds just became outrageous, so I eventually bought a tool to dig them out by the roots, leaving holes all over lawn! Even that didn't work, new ones just grew in the holes. I've tried various soluble and grain type weed and feeds as well as spot weedkillers, nothing seems to work and they are worse than ever. Massive weeds, thistles, bindweed, dandelions and everything else.

Is there anything I can do or is the only solution to get someone in to rip up the grass and start again (hopefully that isn't the only solution as no doubt that would cost loads!)

Thanks

If you just leave the holes you make by feed and weeding and digging, then weed seeds are more vigorous and will fill them in. You need to crowd them out (and green up your lawn) by applying grass seed. I just mix up roughly one part grass seed to two to three parts compost and some slow release fertiliser, dump it on the bare patches, keep it well watered and hope. I have tried being more conscientious (digging the area over etc), but it doesn't actually seem to make a great deal of difference.

If you've really had enough, you could always glyphosate the lot in late summer (that will kill the grass as well), and put down Autumn grass seed. But there will be seeds in the soil from this year's weeds, so it isn't a total solution.
