Thanks for your responses. There is no need for sarcasm - I was simply posting to see if it was a common issue. I do not claim to be an expert, just a person who assumes a car is fit for purpose.

"Its beyond me why you feel that because in your opinion the handbrake should hold the car, somehow the laws of physics no longer apply"

Anyway, thanks again for the constructive comments. It seems that the solution is as stated several times on this post - leave it in gear.

Or in Park [P] mode if it is an automatic!
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.
  • I too have had problems with the handbrake in my jazz. Unfortunately this is not a unique problem to this car. It is a fairly well known problem with the jazz. I got mine in 2007 when it was 3 years old and after only 2 weeks of owning it it rolled down a hill whilst parked on a carpark. Thankfully the damage was minimal and occurred to the boot, however my local dealer quoted £350 to food it, needless to say I have not bothered. I have seen many jazzs with a dent in the same place! Stupidly I did not leave the car in gear so you must always to this. It was recalled a year or so ago for the handbrake but it is still not perfect. I do not trust it on steep inclines even though now I always put it in gear. when stopping on a hill in traffic with the handbrake fully engaged the car can creep backwards and this problem seems to be getting worse. It now needs new rear brake discs and does not always turn over first time. I did want to keep the car for another year or two but despite it's low mileage and generally good reliability I do not wish to spend a lot of money on the car as it is now worth very little. I doubt that the situation with the handbrake will improve either. I will be searching for a vw golf or Volvo c30, I hope these don't have the same problem!
  • We had our Jazz for five years and never had a problem with the handbrake as it worked perfectly. Sorry not able to help other than what others have said - i.e. leave in gear.

This problem has also been experienced by many Honda Civic owners.
