are asda out to overcharge the elderley ?

Options
This is my first post so apologies if it is in the wrong section..
Some time ago I saw a link on this website to ASDA who were selling a Yale personal alert alarm for installing in a relatives home and which calls three phone numbers in an emergency. It has a retail price of around £50 but ASDA were selling it for around £25 or less I think. I phoned them and they said they were sold out but they would be getting more in. However they have since removed it from the website BUT... They are now selling two similar ( actually visually identical ) products for £114 and £119.. so you tell me ARE THEY OUT TO OVERCHARGE THE ELDERLEY ?

I have filled in the user comments form on the website and they have yet to reply or even add my comments to the page concerned

direct.asda.com/Family-and-Friends-Auto-Dialling-Panic-Alarm/004064342

I think it is disgraceful and I hope this is changed before someone is overcharged by over 100% of the true value

No I really don't believe they are 'out to overcharge the elderly'

Googling around shows a lot of places selling this type of thing at around £120.

Remember that specifications can vary wildly even on visually similar equipment.

All that's happened is end of special offer and replacement of stock with a more upmarket item.

No I dont think so either it seems the special offer ended or maybe was a glitch that they have now sorted. If you google for this item
it does seem to be an average price.

You were unlucky to miss out on a special offer which had ended.

You can get the Yale model here for £75

    http://www.quicksafe.co.uk/phone-panic-alarm.htm

    Maybe even cheaper on Ebay.

Edit:- Ebay has this one for £23, there you go diarbyrag that's cheaper than Asda
  • Thanks for the ebay link, also to everyone for replying, I appreciate the feedback but even on the Yale site it is only £50.

Anyway I will buy one for my dad from ebay, fail to see why I would pay ASDA £91 more for the same or an identical product. that was the point of my rant.... to help the elderley who can ill afford to be overcharged

ASDA are a company the elderley might trust and I felt they were being given poor value, I was annoyed they cannot even be bothered to reply to my questions

Moral of the story being - always shop around! I've been down that road a couple of times with special offers. :(

I got one for my mum from the council, she has a necklace with a panic button and a unit attached to the phone, when she presses the red button it goes through to a call centre. Then one of three people are contacted. It was free.

It's not just the elderly who need them - so how are they "overcharging the elderly"?
