DIY Cup Tray

Didn't really know where to put this so hoping here will be best...

I'm hoping to make something like this but for paper pint cups that you would get at a festival/country fair:

Not planning fancy... just going to Starrett cut a few holes in a bit of MDF. Key is to have the cup sunk deep enough to be stable with around 5cm or so stuck out (I think too close to the rim will cause a paper cup to buckle).

So the question... what size holes?

I'm terrible at estimating these sort of things and have no idea where I could get a paper cup to measure up (although I'm open to suggestions here).

I have almost every size hole cutter and loads of wood... but no basis for estimating! Not drunk out a papercup for a long long time.

Hope someone has some ideas...

Cheers (hopefully), GreenSheep

  • Hi,

well had a search for paper cups, and a pint, 20oz, cup is 90mm around the top, so maybe 80mm hole would do.

If you want just one paper cup could you not buy a large coke or something to take out at a cafe, or I'm sure if you asked nicely they would give you one, you might be able to get some at a pound shop.

Fantastic. As soon as you called it a 20oz cup I managed to Google the same thing!

How stupid that I'd not even thought about a cafe!
I'm on a tight budget so I rarely go in cafes - but I should have thought of that.

    Cheers

I have a tray similar at my work, it's plastic and first time I put the cups in I took it around to customers and couldn't get the cups out without spilling half the contents, the cups seemed to get wedged in when they were full. The drinks were hot so after that I gave up using it, I could see an accident in the making.

get a bit of scrap wood first and make various sized holes. say from 60-90mm? in 5mm stages.
then you can decide which size is the best for the job.
    Get some gorm.
